How To Declutter Your Life In 2019

The only thing that can make coming home from a stressful day at work a little bit better is when the house is already spotless with tons of cozy touches. I try to front load the hardest parts of my day – making it to the gym, handling work-related responsibilities and running any other errands, so that after work I can head home and decompress. If I come home to a mess, instead of relaxing I’ll spend the rest of my night cleaning, organizing and re-organizing everything, which can be both cathartic and more exhausting than a hot shower and meditation session. Instead, the past few months I’ve focused on cleaning up my lifestyle and de-cluttering my life. I have no idea how many bags of donation clothes, beauty products and other assorted items I’ve put together and given away – but it feels really good.

Giving away some of my older items or clothes still new with tags still attached has created so much more space in my house – both physical and mental. Getting rid of the meaningless clutter leaves room for more open space and for bringing in new things that serve a true purpose or simply make me happy. It’s amazing to see how much of a difference downsizing and conscious purchasing can have on a person’s happiness.

Though we spend the majority of our time at work – and commuting there – the place at which we seek refuge and solace is our home. The perfect recharge weekend for me is snuggling up with a big mug of herbal tea, blankets and a fantastic book (or a Hallmark movie, depending on the season). These moments of calm are necessary for filing away the weekday stress and responsibilities. Of course, as much as I wish all of the weekend could be spent on the couch, it’s also just as vital to participate in weekend responsibilities – gym, laundry, grocery shopping… but the few moments of rest at home make it all count.

For the upcoming year, one of my resolutions is that each night before going to sleep I’ll either put away, throw away or set aside to give away five things. Doing it the past few months has been game changing – and especially as someone who receives a lot of unsolicited things as a blogger and a Jersey girl who likes to shop, I’ve become more conscious about what I’m purchasing and keeping, which has helped me decide if it’s something that I actually need, or just something that will take up space for the next three years.
