It’s not everyday a member of your writing commu It’s not everyday a member of your writing community publishes a book… but this week, it happened to the most deserving of authors 🥹📚🍾

PLAY THE GAME is a work of fiction that explores racism and problem solving through the lens of restorative justice. The story is a rollercoaster of a murder mystery, where a fun group of teens needs to solve the riddles of a video game to understand their friend’s murder… and what they can do about seeking justice.

@charleneawrites is such a beautiful, punchy writer. Her prose and particularly her dialogue draws you right into the heart of a character, a scene, a mystery. Most of all her writing makes you think about deeper topics and how they relate to your own life. This book will spark something in you ✨ but don’t take my word for it. Take it from THE #AngelaDavis and @writeinbk whose glowing reviews grace the back of the book. 🥳

So… are you ready to PLAY THE GAME?!

how serendipitous it was today when my fiancé and how serendipitous it was today when my fiancé and I realized we were both reading books about Indigenous people in America! 📚

we had carved out today to be a museum date but hadn’t picked one yet, so it only made sense for us to visit the #nationalmuseumoftheamericanindian for the first time.

it’s a #smithsonian museum which means it’s free to everyone! it was so well-curated and educational. not to mention the building was stunning!

right now it has three great exhibits. the one that really stood out (once I pulled myself away from the beautiful woven and beaded baskets and artifacts) was a photography exhibit that explored the lives of tribal people navigating the US government’s blood quantum restrictions. basically, people need to have a minimum percentage of blood from a certain tribe to belong to it. it’s a tactic that reduces tribal citizenship and has a lot of consequences on the people who want nothing more than keep their traditions alive.

this is a concept I’m already starting to see in THE FIREKEEPER’S DAUGHTER, as the main character is caught in between both sides of her family, unable to belong to the tribe that owns the reservation she lives on. 🔥🦋

i’m really enjoying the book so far, and highly recommend the museum to anyone in nyc!
