Top Flavor Trend Predictions for 2017

By now, we all know that flavor makes the world go round. It is what makes each dish unique, distinguishes each culture and brings joy to our taste buds. More often than not, what brings flavor to our food and drinks also provides us with health benefits (as long as you refrain from consuming artificial anything, that is.) Some of these flavors are classic favorites and others are up-and-coming wellness trends. 2017 is going to be all about getting healthy and clean and these spices, herbs and oils are going to be a huge help in this! x

1. Turmeric

Known for its warm and sharp taste, this golden spice has been called the “new ginger.” An up-and-coming go-to spice (I’ve already started using it in my oatmeal!) it has powerful health benefits. It reduces cholesterol, controls diabetes and is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s awesome to add to tea and detox smoothies.

2. Coconut

Subtly sweet, this tropical fruit is full of nutritional value whether you’re consuming its meat, milk or oil. Whether you’re using it as a replacement for butter, drinking it for its incredible hydrating qualities or snacking on it for an added dose of fiber throughout the day, its not hard to reap the benefits of this fruit. It’s known to help treat asthma, kidney stones and even tumors. It’s also a source of good fat, like avocados, which helps cholesterol levels as well.

3. Cumin

If we’re lucky, 2017 is going to be a spicy year. If you’re not already sprinkling spice on virtually everything, maybe you need to step back and reevaluate. Spices such as this one are amazing for digestion and improving immunity. If you’re sensitive to spice (like me) start by adding a small amount to each meal (yes, even in breakfast). I promise that it will get easier and you’re taste buds will adapt in time!

4. Herbal Accent Flavors

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been waiting for this to catch on. I’m in love with everything herbal, especially when it’s infused. Whether it’s chamomile, lavender or rose the flavor elevates the overall food or drink experience and provides a boatload of health benefits as well. Just think back to the chamomile infused parmesan I tried in Soho earlier this year… mmmm.

5. Orange

Oranges are usually in the number 1 or 2 spot on the top flavors list – that’s why it’s a big surprise that turmeric is up there this year! In addition to their yummy citrusy flavor oranges are of course a great source of Vitamin C, meaning they’ll boost your immune system. They’re also a great source of dietary fiber and calcium.

Not a fan of the fruit themselves? Check out this orange spice tea here! It’s totally organic and made with a real orange peel.

6. Ginger

Closely related to turmeric, this golden spice is just that – golden. It aids digestion, helps cure the common cold and nausea and has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also delicious and is so easy to add to just about any dish!
